Several problems running old DOS games on Windows XP

Post by Aussie bloke »

Hi all I'm new to the forum. I'm trying to run my old Sierra games on my modern PC but am having quite a few problems in the process.

Firstly the specs of my machine are:
Motherboard - Pentium 4
CPU speed - 2.4GHz
RAM - 512Mb
Windows - XP
Graphics card - Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti 4200 128Mb
Soundcard - unsure but it's a 3D soundcard which I think is Advance AC'97 Audio
Mouse and Keyboard - Logitech infrared, which connects to the normal style ports not USB type but also not the really old COM type.

Now the problems I'm running into. For starters I'm trying to run Kings Quest 5 VGA voice version which I tried installing to Windows but I get the message "Your current display driver is not supported by this game" and the blah blah blah rest that goes with it. I guess these games are hardwired to the older style graphic cards from the early 90s. Is there any way to make a modern graphics card support and old game in Windows?

Secondly tring to install it via the command prompt emulator but when it goes full screen to the typical Sierra install menu the keyboard doesn't work!!! Also when running the Sierra games when they go full screen 320x200 both mouse and keyboard don't work!!!!! And this goes with ALL DOS based games!!!!! Is there any way to get the mouse and keyboard operational in the DOS emulator prompt?

Also the soundcard is not supported by the Sierra games neither, trying some of the programs I downloaded off the net like the MPU but having no real luck. What's the best program to use to make these old games run with full sound?

Now if anyone can help me I'd most appreciate it as I would like to play my old DOS games again.

Cheers
Troy

Althought this contains hardware problems, it still belongs in getting games to work section. Moved.

Hi all. I've had a crack at DOSBox 0.61 and it has solved ALL of my problems, everything runs perfectly now, audio, keyboard and mouse and CPU speed :D :) . I've not been able to get full sound on my old DOS games for YEARS, I'm so glad to finally get the full enjoyment on my Sierra games and hear Delphinus off Eco Quest yell "I GOT IT!!!"   . Thank god for DOSBox  !!!!!
