dos games wont work

ok so i just downloaded many commander keen games and bipbop etc....none of them work. when i click to open the game the screen turns black and nothing happens

what the heck can i do to fix this???

1.) What version of windows are you running?
2.) Did you try running them through the dos prompt?
3.) Did you run the install...I've come across some versions where you have to.
