Making WarCraft work under WinXP

Hi folks,

I installed the original WarCraft (version 1.22F) and I got MIDI and Sound working under Windows XP. My only problem is the game is running slow like hell.

I tried Compatible Timer Hardware emulation, changing the Memory tab settings, changing the Compatibility mode tab settings and still can't get this great classic to work.

Any ideas? I'm almost tempted to dual-boot this PC just so I can play the game!

There's speed settings in-game. And, the game is SUPPOSED to be that slow. Scary, isn't it? Is scrolling way too fast? That's what it was like for me on XP, and I don't think the speed was wrong as everything else worked well.

The music is also slow... The characters take for ever to move... I will check that speed setting you mentionned about.

In the cut scenes, the talking seems to be at the right speed, but the music is way to slow. Perhaps I can try to setup a different MIDI setting...

Any other ideas?

Well since you brought this up with Warcraft i tried to install it on my computer. I also have Win XP and it runs fine on mine. No problems except i dont have music! Is there music in this game? well if there is it doesnt work but i dont really care that much. But maybe you should try to re install it and try different settings for your viedeo card and music card

I am running XP and I found that this will make the music work. Go to the Warcraft I folder and look for the "Setup" file, then (you will not be able to use your mouse-keyboard only) set up your "music sound car" as "general midi" then just hit enter to set the values, as they will be selected by default. Then save and exit, other than that I don't know.

WOW! Thank you SO MUCH! I never got the Midi to work before

I installed Warcraft II under XP and all I see once the game starts is a bunch of vertical lines. Music works fine.

The scrolling is WAY too fast for me. Turning it down in the options does not help either.

your computer must be having redraw troubles...

Try changing the warcraft options from an external source. (Options)

If problem persists try dosbox

Warcraft runs perfect on my Windows XP machine...it also runs perfectly with Dosbox!!
The speed of the game is quite slow even with Dosbox as if you compared it to Warcraft II which is more powerful you would find the speed is much faster and thats because Warcraft is quite an old game, as it was released for the Windows 95/98 platform.

So basically people you will have to live with it!!

I did not get sound in the game
I have VIA AC'97 enhanced Audio Controller (WDM) sound card
and when I try to change the digital and music setup in the main game I can't because it is disable.
So I read in your web that DOS applications will only be able to recognize sound cards on IRQ 2 through 7.
OK I found that my sound card is using the IRQ 22.
But I run the game in windows mode so I want to know if I have to change something because I tried to change the IRQ 22 to an IRQ 5 but I can't because it is disable in the devise manager a if I try to change the settings manually in the set up of the game like your web say:
"then select Sound Blaster for your sound card option."
I have a error message that said that is an error witha the souncard I select.
manually I should enter the port adress, IRQ and DMA but I dont know what is the port adress. so please can you help me

I think you will have to run the setup again and change the settings, normally I just leave them on automatic detection.

Change to the default sound settings

card- Sound Blaster
PORT- 220
IRQ- 7
DMA- 1

I've had it work for non-soundblaster cards

I've got the music working fine. However my sound card is on IRQ 9 which is not a option in the setup. and I know for a fact that when you start a campgain and it scrolls text that the text is read to you. But without digital sound you just see the two guys sitting there and the text scroll by telling you what to do. I have XP so I can't change the IRQ manually. Other than moving the card to a diffrent slot is there anything I can do to get the digital sound to work in Warcraft I?

I just tried Warcraft 1.22H on WinXP Pro using VDMSound. I set up my sound and music devices as "Sound Blaster Pro, 220h, IRQ 5, DMA 1" and I got the game working perfectly, without any slowdowns, with perfect sound and music. No need for DOSBox or "Compatibility Mode".

The scrolling speed, however, is a problem with fast PCs and I don't think there is a solution to it.

dude the scrolling goes sooo fast for me to i can barley play and the options dont do crap
and using the arrows on the key board dont do crap
