"The Legacy"/WinXP/Conventional Mem.

Post by Diamondrock »

First off, my apologies if this or a similar problem has already been discussed on the forum. I scanned the posts and didn't find one.

That being said, here's my problem: I'm trying to run the DOS game "The Legacy: Realms of Terror" (1993, Published by Microprose) in Windows XP. I am running Windows XP Home Edition on a Toshiba Sattelite Pro laptop. The computer has the following specs:

Intel Pentium M processor (1400MHz)
512 MB of RAM
40 GB of HD space

Through the use of Abandon Loader and VDM Sound I have nearly gotten the game to work. The program starts properly and includes sound. This is when the problem rears its ugly head. If I let the game run through its intro, it freezes up at the same point every time. If I hit enter to bypass the intro, I receive a taunting message:
At least 610,000 bytes of conventional memory required!
Ouch! Something nasty happened!
Press any key to continue...
I have tried many methods to free up memory. First, I tried running the game without sound. I adjusted the settings through "INSTALL.EXE" but no matter what setting I selected, I received the following message:
Memory Warning!
Your system has only 579568 bytes of free conventional memory available, but certain features of the game may require as much as 610000 bytes at times. If you proceed with this configuration you may receive a memory error. If a memory error occurs, you will be able to correct the problem (by freeing up additional memory) and then resume where you left off.
Needless to say, I have been unable to solve the problem. I've tried several solutions. First, I searched for help in Google and stumbled upon dosgames.com's "Get DOS Games Working in XP!" FAQ. I've tried everything on the list, including tweaking the memory features under the "Memory" tab in the program's "Properties" and modifying "AUTOEXEC.NT" and "CONFIG.NT" (Although I'm at a bit of a loss as to what I can actually do with them). No matter what I do, the error messages remain constant.

That's my problem. I have considered that it might simply be impossible to get this particular game running in XP (but I'm not giving up until I've exhausted all my options). Any help you can give me would be appreciated. If you need further information about my system or settings to diagnose the problem, please let me know.

Thanks,

The game is cranky even on a retro machine, especially if you have the sound configuration messed up
Interon

Try disabling the sound. That should free up some conventional memory.
