Server troubles: Here we go again!
Server troubles: Here we go again!
Lately the server that hosts dosgames.com (among other sites, like play.vg and dosgamesonline.com) has been struggling. Yes, again. My only options ATM are:
a) Get rid of some of the sites on the server (not a good option)
b) Buy even MORE memory (a good temporary solution but not great; if I buy more, I will be at the absolute maximum allowed for this RAQ4; if later I need still more I'm really screwed b/c I'll have wasted the money on the RAM cuz I'll have to move the server anyways)
c) Buy a new server (this seems like the best option right now)
What does this mean? Well I am trying to make backups of the forum right now in case of a server change. If a server switch does happen I will make every attempt to backup the boards; but keep in mind that the sites come first, the boards second.
I'll let you know more as things transpire ...
EDIT: After saying "FU" to phpmyadmin, I telneted in and dumped the whole 19meg mySQL db from the command line. So the board information is backed up.

The saga continues. A new server WILL be purchased, probably tonight. Moving dosgames probably won't happen for a few more days. (I'll move the other, less important sites first to test things out.) If you're interested in the discussion I started on webhosttalk about the server, check:

It's rather interesting ... well to me at least Apparently I've been lucky that the server has held out so long given the level of traffic my sites receive.

After several hours of searching, reading (mostly unhelpful) posts on message boards, tinkering with the server settings, and so on, I think I've finally fixed the problem with the server ... (I've probably jinxed it by saying that.) So for now, no move is planned to occur. I'll keep monitoring the server in case it starts running into problems again.
