Best version of DOS for old dos games?

I just bought an old P133 machine and am going to set it up to play old DOS games.
Is DOS 6.22 the most compatible DOS version for old games or will an earlier version such as DOS 5 be the most compatible?
It's probably a dumb question but I figure I'd ask now and save myself problems later.

Or if you have less than 200 MB, try DOS 6.22 (DOS 7 is Windows Territory)

I stick with 6.22. I alsu use QEMM 8 for memory management.

Even dos 5 will work, just dont bother with older versions.

I believe this goes in general dosgames, not here. I'll move it there but im not 100% sure it doesnt go in "Get games to Work" either. DB, move it again if you fell its appropriate.

FreeDOS is excellent with the majority of games. Check my "Don't pirate MS-DOS, get FreeDOS" topic.

As for the commercial DOSes, here goes:

MS-DOS and IBM/PC DOS versions 3.3 and higher should provide robust gaming performance with the majority of games (especially the old ones that require under 600 KB RAM). Versions 5.0 and above are super-excellent for 16-bit and 32-bit games since they provide better XMS support. If you have version 5 or better, you're ready for serious gaming. If you have version 3.3-4.01, stick with the old games. Versions under 3.3 are generally too ancient for 286+ machines and you might have problems.
