A: Macs are not better if you like dos games

B: An emulator (for any system) will never recreate the feeling of playing the original game on the original system with 100% correct graphics and sound (some come close).

I have 5 old macs IIfx, 840AV, 950 AWS, 7500, 8500 and more old intel PC's. The macs are for old apps and video capture while the old PC's are for old games.

Apples were good but Macs suck.

Seriously, you can't do nearly as much as you can with an IBM-based PC and when they crash, they crash hard.

I wouldnt say macs have killer graphics anymore since they just use the same brand of cards that the PC users have, except the mac guys usually lag 1 generation behind when they ship.

Altivec is used by a handfull of apps so nothing to brag about there.

OSX is unix based, its stable but its also old with it own problems.

After watching the Macs in my PC lab crash all the time, the HD's dying, etc. They're brand new, too. I'll go with PC's.

I dont buy prebuilt computers unless its for my retro collection, so a new mac, dell, gateway, sony, etc is out of the question.

People should figure out what apps and devices they need to connect to a computer and buy the cheapest solution to that problem (PC, mac, or pen and pencil).

or even an abacus huh

I do however own a MAC clone, a Power Center 150. A Quadra 6xx, can't remember the exact model as it's a non-functioning unit, and a Power MAC 8100.

As for usage, the Power Center 150 has been upgraded and runs OS9.xx pretty well but the games, well at least the ones I want to run, don't work so well :(

Wrong. They are almost virus-proof. But if you know Javascript, you'd probably be able to make an OS-X Virus, or Perl (probably).

I am probably as anti-Mac as they get... I have NO idea why, but I just hate Macs... They're more like glorified video game consoles.

MAC
------

-Non-upgradable
-MAJOR pain to fix
-A VERY limited number of games and proggies to run with it

CONSOLE
------------

-Non upgradable
-Major pain to fix
-Only a limitted number of games to run on it

PC
----

-Upgradable
-Easy to fix
-Many games in both Windows AND Dos will run on them
-Customizable

I am also very anti-XP. I hate this BS... I'd much rather use DOS, or 98. The only benifit that i can see in XP is that if one prog crashes, the whole OS doesn't go to hell.

here are the benifits of dos

DOS
------

-None of that 'shut down' bs...
-Quick
-Geek Friendly
-easy to create Text documents (just type EDIT)
-no hidden processes
-REALLY stable... i mean, have you ever heard of a straight DOS machine freezing?

So there you have it... DOS still rules!

Mac OS X is Unix based, so it runs all the Unix programs, and theres Virtual PC too, and if it can make DOS Games work on XP, it can make them work on anything.

Haw! Wardrich, I laugh at your complacency. I have crashed DOS PC's often enough to have worn out a few power switches in my time. But I'll take 'em because some of the other things you said are about right.

I've found the old Power PC and 68xxx Macs to be pretty good machines. 90% of a pile of unknowns will fire up and run. The opposite is true of a like pile of Windoze PC's, and I got the calluses to prove it. Now DOS PC's have been a mixed bag. Usually there's a config/autoexec error to sort, then they are workin'. Then again the jumpers can be all wrong or the P/S is fried/on edge or a board is/isn't grounded/trace broken or any number of obscure difficulties. Don't see that on Macs.

My biggest Mac problems are that usually their monitors are shot or the max colors are 16/256 at 640 x 480 (so much for being a great game machine). Yes, upgrades are restricted in Macs. But the PnP issues are largely nonexistant. Ya gets what ya want to meddle with. :jester:

PC's offer higher rewards for those with a little tech skill. Mac's are about not wasting time. I can install OS 7 to 9, add the software and have it tested and out the door in much less time than any Win machine. In some ways, old Macs and DOS machine have alot in common there. BUT, Macs rarely come back due to a simple operator error. DOS and Win PC's are highly prone to these errors. Ever put a "," in place of a "." in a Mac and seen it fail to boot?

But, hey, I likes ta meddle. An afternoon sorting out Memmaker can be bliss. :cuccoan: :cuccoan: :cuccoan: :cuccoan: :cuccoan: :cuccoan:
