Sci-fi Scroller Shooter

Post by MoonMoon »

So I just remembered there was this game I used to play when i got my first ever PC.

It was a top down shoot-em up game where you could control a set character. If i remember correctly it was a 3D game, though the memory of a 5-6yo could be missleading. It worked like a sidescroller but you went UP, not RIGHT like all other classic side scrollers, and you had around 5 lives before you died. Killing enemies and destroying objects eg. crates, billboards, sometimes metal fences would give you different weapon types. I can't remember how the powerup for weapons worked though.

Since I was still a kid, I never got past level 2. I remember that the boss for level 1 was a giant spider robot. Only reason I remember that is because I had a little nightmare during that time with that robot and I still remember it 20 years later

I do not know when it game was released. But since I was playing it in 1998-2000 it should be around that time if not earlier.

Thanks for reading my awful description of a game I only remember because of an old nightmare it induced. Hope someone has any ideas of what I'm talking about.
I'll answer any and all questions to the best of my ability.

Hmm...top-down shoooters are many, are you playing as a human or robot character, or with a vehicle, which is common in sci-fi scrollers?

For 3D I'm thinking more like pseudo-3D isometric from a top/diagonal angle? Similar to the Crusader series?

Unfortunately MobyGames does not seem to have separate lists for vertical and horizontal scrolling shooters, so you'll have to look in the big list:
https://www.mobygames.com/game-group/ge ... 625/so,1a/

UPD: Wikipedia also has a list:

So from what i remember you're a human character and the camera is above and behind the character. so you're basically seeing the character's back if that helps

I looked at some japanese sci-fi games of the scrolling shooter type, and maybe there is something in this series: Castle of Shikigami / Shikigami no Shiro series. Arcade games, but some are ported to Windows.

In at least one of them (no. 2 in the series) you do see a character from top&behind, though the actual gameplay may be different, it's hard to determine if the environment objects can be identified as what you described, it looks more abstract to me; though a big spider-like robot thing seems to feature in one promo image.
