Hi there,
I was hoping someone here might be able to help me recall this.
I have a vague memory of playing some sort of gladiator combat game when I was very young. I can't remember many details other than it was possibly a demo/shareware and that it had a rather brown-orange palette. It was a 1v1 fighting game and I believe the background was a large colosseum arena filled with sand. The combatants were dressed like Roman gladiators wielding swords and shields (I think there were round and tower shields with various different designs). I've attached an image of a similar design from memory below, although it obviously would have been much more pixelated due to the low-resolution.
I understand this may have been in a cutscene but I do think the characters were controlled by the player. Also I know for one it is NOT "Champions of Zulula" but it would be from around about the same time.
Any help identifying this would be much appericated.

Thanks for the suggestions. Theatre of Pain looks familiar but isn't what I'm thinking of. The gladiators were definitely 2D sprites and not pre-rendered. Think close to early LucasArt games or Star Trek: 25th Anniversary in style. Or even something like Gods.
However I'm beginning to think it's just my imagination and that the game never really existed.

Maybe look in the list of games set in Ancient Rome?
