Hasa - An lost 2D Platformer [Cold Dreams]

Post by Bartjaah »

Alright there we go:
- Name was HASA or HAZE or HAZA. I really think it was called HASA

- Style of Prince of Persia and Black Thorne
- Somesort of shooter in 2D Platformer
- Maybe it had an Egyptian-theme? (Really not sure!)

EDIT 01:
- It's definately a 1990/1995 game.
- It's for MS-DOS.
- I think that he shot guns, handgun or machine gun. But I'm not sure.
- The color-pallete was somewhat more brown-ish/yellow-is/dark-reddish. I think there were more colors though, but these were used most.

EDIT 02:
- The game went screen-by-screen. Like Black Thorne, when you exit a screen, you enter a new one. And there are ladders, so it wasn't from left to right only, you could go up and down too.

Can't find anything on this game

Some more details would help - like when, and on what system did you play it? Do you remember the title from a title screen, or a Windows icon, or it's what you would type in the DOS prompt to start the game?

Flashback and Bermuda Syndrome come to mind, but those are relatively well known. At least, tell if your game looked anything like these.

Also what exactly did the character shoot? A gun, arrows, magic? WHat were the enemies?

Also there's Eye of Horus, which is sort of Prince of Persia, is set in Ancient Egypt, and contains a word beginning with an H.

Sorry for being so short.

- The colorpalete was somewhat more brown-ish/yellow-is/dark-reddish. I think there were more colors though, but these were used most.

I didn't play it much, I remember having it on 2 floppy disks ofwich I only recovered one, which doesn't work anymore. This game is still in my head for twenty years now.

I don't remember the executable name, icons nor something else. If I had to guess the executable it was HASA.exe or HASA.bat.

Well, maybe you could look through this list of cinematic platformer games in the PoP vein:
http://www.mobygames.com/game-group/gen ... platformer

Fantasy (orcs/trolls) or horror (zombie/mummies) themed game or more realistic (soldiers/thugs) enemies?

- Bermuda Syndrome looks too new.

- Flashback looks to futuristic. I'm not sure about the guns in HASA.

- Eye of Horus comes closest to what I'm looking for, but absolutely isn't it.

- Nope, it wasn't Abuse.

- I've been looking around in the list Rwolf gave me, but it isn't in there.

- I can't really say what your enemies look like, I'd figure some tombs/mummie like, but I'm not 100% sure about the Egyptian theme.

- What I do remember now is that the game went screen-by-screen. Like Black Thorne, when you exit a screen, you enter a new one. And there are ladders, so it wasn't from left to right only, you could go up and down too.

Guessing:

Alien Rampage (looks brown, can climb ladders, not egyptian though)
http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/alien ... creenshots

Stalker (old series, red/brown looks, mutants instead of mummies)
http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/stalk ... creenshots

Another list:

I found the floppy disk it once was on, at least, the first one. I think (my dad) who put this game on this disk didn't know what the game was called so he called it HASAGAME. Before this game I'm looking for was placed on this floppy there was somesort of software named HaSa on there (see bottom diskette). I think he made-up this name himself. So this is really a long shot :( The game got replaced by Cartooners. Too bad. :(

Can't you try an undelete program? Maybe parts of the game are left.

Moby Games writes about HaSa applications about 3 games:

Games
Teen Agent (1995)
Cold Dreams (1995)
Wolfenstein 3D (1994)

Actually Cold Dreams fits the description pretty well! Here's a gameplay video.

There should be a playable demo of it somewhere BTW.

Very likely Cold Dreams, the screenshots have an egyptian theme to them.

Edit:
Looking up 'HaSa Software Applications' itself, they show up as a Dutch software distributor for shareware utility software prior to the internet era.

They are listed in several such order forms for The Netherlands and nearby countries, and had a local BBS to download the software from.

It seems that there indeed exists a shareware version, found on several magazine cover CDs. Here's an installer, presumably unpacked from a downloadable archive:
http://www.kultcds.com/Catalog/index.ph ... 2FColdream

And here's a couple of pre-installed versions:
http://www.kultcds.com/Catalog/index.ph ... oldream&o=
http://www.kultcds.com/Catalog/index.ph ... 2FColddrea

Judging by the presence of files like Order.txt, Order1.scr and Sharewar.scr, this must be a shareware version.

[Edit] Here's a different installer (seems like v1.0):
