Yeah you're fired :P

Hint 2: Side Scrolling game where the idea is to collect a trophy and go through a door.

OK. Well, this one won't be too difficult, I hope. :D

Hint 1: The DOS port of this game supported the full soundtrack (music, not just sound effects) being played through the PC speaker.

Wild guess: Captain Blood?
(I recall it did play some of J-M Jarre's music on the Atari speakers, and I'd think it could do it on PC too.)

Captain Blood --> Nope

From a quick check, the DOS version does seem to have some PC speaker music (e.g. title screen), but not during most of the gameplay. In any case, it's not the game I had in mind. :)

Guess: Hmm, for some reason I think that it could be Wolfenstein 3-D, but this is originally a DOS game, so no "DOS port"? I do vaguely remember something about the soundtrack being playable through the PC speaker.

Wolf3D --> Nope

It can only play sound effects, not music, through the PC speaker.

Plus, you are also right that it's not a port, per se, because it was originally developed for DOS (even though it was not developed under DOS, but rather on NeXT machines).

Man, just thinking about that much PC Speaker is making my ears bleed.

Was there a DOS version of Moon Patrol? I hope so, 'cause that's my guess.

Moon Patrol --> Nope
Street Rod --> Nope (although in principle - it is a possible answer, as far as I know!)

It's been a few days, so another clue is necessary. :)

Hint 2: In the DOS version of the game, in low memory situations, some characters will be replaced with other characters, to reduce the total size of the graphics that need to be loaded.

These hints aren't helping. lol. In before Hint 3: Pallet swapping was used to reserve system memory.

I've had this idea for some time and thought of butting in and giving it a go. The idea is that someone (me, myself in this case) presents half a game magazine add... the eternal question lingering - can you guess the game? When someone guesses the game in question correctly, I could post the full advert. :laugh:

Here's the first one :D

Clues: * It's a shooter from around the late 90s
* It gained quite a lot of popularity
* It had a shotgun for a weapon, among other available guns

{also, if the resolution of the image is too high, i can reduce it from now on} cheers

Image

Good luck to you all :laugh:

Clicking on the image (I hoped to get higher resolution to read the text in small font) lead to another page showing the full ad. With the game title.

Also the URL itself is a straight giveaway.

Nice idea though.

Hold up, we can't have 2 games going on at the same time... this is just madness.

Aldeb: is it Warhammer?

Nope. It's a shooter.

Didn't follow the thread from the beginning to think it might be a problem. Sorry.

Well, I thought the idea was to try the less obvious things first, then move to the more obvious. :)

Point taken. So let's try the next hint.

Hint 3: In this game there is a plot twist, wherein upon defeating the final enemy, it is revealed that he was not in fact the final enemy, and the game continues for two more levels.

I'm starting to suspect that this is some kind of a fighting game.

Guess: Street Fighter II?
