Games with Campaign Editors?

Post by travlemon »

Hello!

Does anyone know of some good DOS or older Windows games with a full blown campaign editor? Lately I've been playing around with C-Dogs, Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games and Wargame Construction Set III: Age of Rifles. By far, I like Jagged Alliance DG the best, but the game seems to crash a lot in DOSBox for me. It seems like after a couple scenarios of play, the game will crash after a long scenario has been well in progress.

Anyway, I'm interested if anyone knows of some games I haven't seen yet, which let you create a storyline and missions with a campaign editor (DOS preferred, but older Windows games welcome). So far, this is my list:

-Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games
-Jagged Alliance 2 (Windows)
-C-Dogs
-The Perfect General II
-Wargame Construction Set III: Age of Rifles (and really any other turn-based war game)
-Falcon 3.0 (or 4.0?)
-EF2000
-Retribution
-StarCraft (Windows)
-Hidden & Dangerous Deluxe (Windows)
-Battle for Wesnoth (Windows)
-Breach 3

I'm trying to steer clear of the hex based war games, as I think Wargame Construction Set III seals that genre off for me altogether. I'm curious to see what anyone else has been playing.

Thanks!

Cool topic, I look forward to people's answers. Not much to add, except to maybe mention Age of Wonders is similar to your list and potentially having an editor - I don't recall exactly.

But I've never had luck running Battle for Wesnoth on Windows, always major stability problems. It's been a while since I've tried, and maybe was just my lack of linux-foo to Windows. If anyone knows a good source for a stable copy on Win7, I'm interested, but not enough to go googling around at the moment. ;)

Ah! There is a copy of Battle for Wesnoth I could provide to you. It's on portableapp.com. but I can't get the link until later. I haven't had any crashes with that version.

I also actually read About Age of Wonders. I think I line the style of JA the best, with almost espionage styled missions.

Sweet! I'm very interested if you can scare that Westnoth link up sometime. Thanks!

Yes, I love JA as well, but only was exposed to it when it hit GOG.com. I've had fun in the early campaigns of the first one, but I need to spend more hours playing it to maximize potential. So many good choices, so little time! One of my first games on my PC XT was Breach, and I've been a squad combat fan ever since, though I missed most of the famous ones at the time (How did I miss XCOM?!?!?!). I've been going back and dabbling in this and that now I can afford to. And discovering the Amiga version of the Breach series rocked - my awkward CGA + beeper memories upgraded to full color and sound via emulator! Muhahaha.

Hey, I forgot about Breach! I actually just updated the list with Breach 3. Breach 3 (and maybe earlier installments) has a full blown campaign editor.

I just started Breach 3, but I can't seem to really last through the campaigns. Seems like the second you attack an enemy, they fire back instantly and start knocking your health down. For me, it feels like a countdown to when my med packs run out and mercs all die.

You have any magic strategies for the game? I just can't seem to dismiss it as being a junky game, the interface seems too well designed for its time.

p.s. I PM'ed you the link for Battle for Wesnoth portable version.

No, I've not played Breach in a long time and never played 3 (yet). Any chance it's a tactical problem and you need good cover? Or a game speed problem somehow, and you need to slow it down?

I think it's more a tactical issue. The game runs fine as far as speed goes, so it's definitely not speed.

I found a manual for the game online. I think I just need to figure out more about how to play the game and keep the mercs protected. If you liked the old Breach game, I'd imagine you will like this one. The interface is really solid and the game doesn't feel buggy at all to me.

Plus it's got the scenario and campaign editors! Now I just need to figure out how to use the game's mechanics to my advantage.

Do third-party tools count? If yes, you can create custom campaigns for Dune II, Command & Conquer and Command & Conquer: Red Alert that way.

Hello,

I was first turned of by third party tools, but as long as they work nicely, I'm all for it. Are red alert and dune 2 both DOS games? Also, are the tools DOS or windows based?

Thank you for the suggestion

Yes, all three Westwood games are for DOS (Command & Conquer also has a later Win95 port, and Red Alert was originally released as a two-in-one DOS/Windows package).

Most of the editing tools are for Windows, as they have been developed already in the Windows era. All are functional and allow to create real custom campaigns, not just skirmish maps (Red Alert has an official map editor but its only purpose is to create multiplayer maps).

Some time ago I made a list of Dune II editing tools. For C&C, XCC Editor (part of XCC Utilities) is probably the best choice for making missions, although you'll need to edit some things in the files manually. For Red Alert, a large selection of utilities can be found here.

Comes also in mind:
X-Wing series (+TIE fighter) has 3th party (fanmade) mission builders and campaign editors. (Dos based)

So far as RTS and early Windows games go, Age of Empires shipped with a full-featured campaign editor as well.

Slay (originally released in 1995) also has a world editor.

Oh, and has anyone mentioned Warlords II/Deluxe Edition (both DOS games)? The Scenario Builder allows to create custom scenarios - each is confined to a single map but it's affectively a campaign on its own.

I'm not sure if the earlier Heroes of Might and Magic games allow to create entire custom campaigns, but ever since part one they have map editors, and a scenario map can be considered a campaign in some cases.

You can also take a look at the list of games with editors at MobyGames (the "new look" isn't exactly user-friendly, alas).

Slay rocks. "Tactical Solitaire". I still play it all the time at work, coffee break or compiling or just gathering thoughts. I just saw he was working on a new version in 2011, I wonder if anything came of that?

Oh man! I didn't realize all of the responses I got. I didn't get the email notifications. I got my work cut out for me, for checking all of these gmes out.

In this case, I'm going to limit my original to perhaps either games that came with built-in campaign/scenario editors, or personal favorites. I'd like to keep this thread going, I think it could be a helpful topic.
