CHIPS CHALLENGE
CHIPS CHALLENGE
I had no problem playing CC in Vista, but now I have windows 7 and have followed all the instructions to use DOSBox and have been unsuccessful in getting anything to happen. Apparently I am doing something wrong. Would really appreciate some help. I love the game and have only once completed all the levels once and am trying to do it again. Also looking for early King's Quest games when they were simple and not so animated.

What tutorial?zara wrote:You lost me on the rest- I just followed the tutorial
And can't you post your mount lines in dosbox?
Or what your inputs are ( what you type at the dosbox prompt?)
Maybe it tells you that Chips challenge is a windows game?zara wrote:When I try to play the game after settting it up, I get a message stating" this game requires windows".
More specific a Win3 game?
Makes it's very doubtfull it will even run on Win7 64 bit, as Win7 64 has no 16 bit support.
Your possibilities:
Win7 XP mode
or
VPC2007 / XP
or
VPC2007 / Win3
or
VPC2007 / W98SE
or
Dossbox 0.74 / Win3

"C:/doswin" should be "c:\users\your name\doswin"

Basically you can't natively run 16-bit Windows software (ie, software designed for Windows 3.1) on 64-bit Windows. It just will NOT work. So if you want to run it, you'll need to do what dosraider suggested, and install Windows 3.1 within DOSBox (or using other virtualization software like VirtualBox).
OR what might be easier is just find the DOS version of the game. (Ex, search Google for "chip's challenge dos") Then you can run in DOSBox.

I am fully aware that a 16 bit program will not run in windows 7. That is why I installed DOSBox per its tutorial. I posted the mount lines as instructed. Once I did that I tried to run the program and the message stated “this game requires windows”. I like some of the old games which is why I was hoping DOSBox would work. Obviously I did something wrong or I assume it would be working since it has worked for others. I have searched for other versions of Chips Challenge and cannot find any. Thank you all for your input.
Okay, let me try again ... the problem is this ... the version of Chip's Challenge that you seem to have (16-bit Windows version) ...
... will not run in Windows 7 (as you know) because a 64-bit OS will not run 16-bit software.
... will not run in DOSBox because DOSBox only runs DOS software, not Windows 3.1.
Therefore, you either need to use virtualization (to run Windows 3.1 on your computer) or find the DOS version of Chip's Challenge and use DOSBox with that.
I suggest that you download the DOS version of Chip's Challenge. Searching Google as I mentioned above [click here], it took me about 10 seconds to find and download the DOS version of the game. I tried running it in DOSBox and it works perfectly. (Note, when I ran the game in DOSBox, it seemed to be sitting there and not doing anything. I pressed Enter again and the options screen popped up.)
Hope this helps!

Apparently I just don't have the know-how to do this. I prefer to be shown rather than read and apply. I'm not an idiot and I do have some computer savvy, but this is just driving me crazy. Think I'll just play it on my Vista laptop. I need to hook up a monitor to do that since mine is shot, but no big deal there. Just a bit of a hassle.
It's your choice, of course.
I gonna repeat some valid solutions for Win7 64, as you must know by now, sooner or later if you're in older games and like them, you will have to set up at least one working system for them on your Win7 64 .....
1) Dosbox 0.74 - dosversion of the game
Works fine, Choose VGA+Adlib, graphically the lesser one, as it's a conversion.
2) Dosbox 0.74 +Win3.11 - Windows 3.1 version
Works flawless, better graphics than the dosversion.
Even if it asks some work to set up W3.x in dosbox, once you have it it's happiness all around.
3) VPC2007 +W98SE - Windows 3.1 version
Works also flawless, wil also ask a bit more work than the dosversion, but on the other hand it will give you the possibility to run almost any 16b based W3.x ànd W9x game on a 64 bit OS.
A bit easier to set up than W3.1 in dosbox.
Don't mind the smaller playfield, was just too lazy to reset W98SE desktop res to 640x480 .... lazy moi)
Me thinks you have enough valid solutions for now, what you do with them is yours to decide.

Ahem ....
Virtualbox has no support for W3, even if some more experienced (ahem) people will get it running, it's not that easy for beginners.
Better advise VPC - W3
...... or easiest: VPC-W98SE , as W98SE will work 'out of the box' on VPC, contrary to Virtualbox.

Not to be a nitpicking pain in the ar*e, but virtualbox and W3 aren't so good friends.emmzee wrote: (or using other virtualization software like VirtualBox).

I appreciate your help but you might as well be speaking an alien language. I do not understand much of what you are talking about. I understand some of it. But no matter what I do I can't make it work. Several tutorials mention edit configuration. I have no option for that in mydosbox.
I mount drive c. I get to the game but it won't execute. It tells me I need windows.
I have no clue on how to get Win3 in there.
The instructions are just not detailed or clear enough for me to follow because there always seems to be a glitch that doesn't fit what they say. I need them to be very simplistic.
Everytime I try to download something that is supposed to be free, it takes me to a place to "join".
I think at this point I am so frustrated that I am blocking it out.

Dosbox 0.74 is released, that's the one you should have now.
Almost everything is the same, except you'll find the dosbox conf edit in 'options'.

If for some reason you want to keep an older version of dosbox besides 0.74, no problem, they won't interfere with each other.
==> But do NOT use the ol'dosbox conf files with 0.74.
wardrich wrote:The contrasts in personalities will deliver some SERIOUS lulz. I can't wait.
I downloaded 0.74. I never had any older version.
I have nothing that looks like your image shown.
There are no menus or drop downs to choose from.
There are no such files in the dosbox file, etc.
That's why I get so frustrated. Nothing looks like the screenshots.
Yet I can mount the drive and that is about as far as I can go. Everything after that tells me "illegal command".
I used DOS years ago but it's been so long I remember very little of it.
I've got a degree in computer science and usually can pick things up well, but that was also years ago and I have not kept myself up to date. I need to get some young kid to help me - they are geniuses at it these days. LOL

Win7 Start button -> all programs -> dosbox 0.74 -> options -> dosbox 0.74 options .......
If you don't have this reinstall dosbox.
Also:
IF you can't grasp it from that one (can happen, not everyone is a specialist) you simply can run the dosversion directly in dosbox.
Also²
If we ask such things it is not because we are curious; but because there are sometimes simple mistakes in the mounts/inputs that screw up the execution of programs.
Please be a bit more communicative and post details.
And once again: to run directly in dossbox you will need the dosversion, not the winversion.
The link emmzee gave you is valid, it does not ask to join or register to download, just tested it, works fine, just read carefully where you must click to download.

I have come to the conclusion I do not like Windows 7. Guess I need to get used to it. I have a hard time finding my way around because it is not set up the same as the past versions.
I got used to seeing "Computer" instead of "my computer" but the folders are not even like I see in the screen shots.
There isn't even an option to explore like there used to be when you right clicked on the start menu.
I guess before I try to do anything like dosbox, I need a Windows 7 tutorial. Maybe then I will have a better understanding of things.

In that case.. You're going to absolutely loath and despise Windows 8, when it's eventually released. Tried the beta already. Imagine if Android, ChromeOS and Win7 worked together to breed a weird hellspawn cross-over between the three of them.zara wrote:I have come to the conclusion I do not like Windows 7. Also, do check out the link that dosraider provided. I had a look myself, and though the tutorial has a lot of text to read through, which I know you mentioned you don't particularly like, it -is- an accurate and detailed tutorial on how to install Win3 over DOSBox, and should work, for the most part.
