How do you install multi-diskette games in dosbox?

Post by wardrich »

Dosraider.... I'm lookin' in your direction.

I'm trying to install Cobra Mission which came to me in 5 lzh disk images. Is there any way to mount these to get dosbox to install the game properly?

LZH image format?
Isn't it that the images are compressed with LZH? (Or LHA?)

Some possibilities:
You use a virtual floppy drive soft, mount that as A: and you can switch the flops on the fly.
There is a CVS build that can mount multiple floppy images, but I forgot what CVS it was .... :P

Another trick that works *sometimes* is to convert the images to ISO and then you can multimount the ISOs as A:\
Depends if the installer will accept that trick. (but yes, this works sometimes)

Simplest:
Or use VPC to install the game and then copy the game folder.
(Notice: VPC will only mount *.vfd *.img *.ima *.dsk standard flop images)

Or if you have a real floppy drive write the floppies and mount it as A: in dosbox
(Can be an USB flopdrive, no problemo)

If you really can't sort it out put the thing on 4shared and I'll look at it.

[Edit]
Just remembered, dosbox 0.70 had multiple floppy image mount support.
You always could try to install the game in dosbox 0.70.

I'm using 0.74, I'll have to look into it. Can I mount a physical path on my hard drive as a floppy? (ie d:\games\dos\cobra\disk01\ as a floppy)? Is that how it works?

Yes,
mount a "d:\games\dos\cobra\disk01\" -t floppy

But if you want to mount multiple floppies you'll need dosbox 0.70, you can install it besides 0.74, they won't interfere with each other.
Installing in dosbox 0.70 and run in 0.74 won't be a problem.

Other possibility: check the filenames on the floppies, if they aren't the same try to put all the files in one folder, maybe it will work.
(FYI, that's how I created that kidpix ISO, the files from 3 floppies put together in one ISO file, it all depends how the installer is coded. Works also with Win3 and MsDos install floppies.)

Wait, they stripped a feature out of an updated release? Sounds kinda weird. lol

Good call on that tossing all the files into one directory. That may just work...

No dice.

Q = d:\games\dos\newbatch\adventure\cobra\
B = d:\games\dos\newbatch\adventure\cobra\floppy

Press button, nothing happens.

2 questions:
Why Q:\ ?
Why B:\ ?
Not to be nitpicking, but some older installers/games can really only work with A:\ and C:\ , don't know if that's the problem here, but ya never know.
You do know that whatever drive letter your real hardware are has nothing to see with dosbox's virtual ones?
Also: what's on the flop images? Compressed files? Or is the game simply copied on flops? ....??? Can't you copy all the files on HD? Can't you uncompress manually? Is the installer an exe or a batch file? Is the unarchiver (if is) on the flops?

My fault (partially), did some beta and RC testruns for them, and saw that several problems arose with 0.74 and multiple floppy mount .... SORRY. But I completely left the beta testing now, so with a bit of luck it will be back in in a later version.

[Edit]
No messages in dosbox's console window ...?
