First things first, read and apply this:
http://www.dosgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10437
Next, the game, that's one of the Moraffwares games,
Unzip ALL files in that zip file in
c:\users\dannyboi\\oldgames\unf\
run dosbox and input:
cd unf
unforgiv
select '7' for screen.
That's it.

You're welcome, enjoy it.
And as I had some free time I did some testruns to get the best out of this ol'gem in dosbox 0.74.
Hopefully you'll come back and read this, otherwise it may help someone else ....
Shut dosbox down!!!!
Open the dosbox conf file
(dosbox start menu-> options -> dosbox 0.74 options)
Look for header [dosbox]
set
machine=svga_et4000
Launch dosbox and run the game, in the options menu you get choose:
A -> 1
The game now runs in a lovely 1024x768 ultra-high res.....

Gentelmen, I'm wondering if you can help me with this. I have this game and have had it for many many years...in fact, I've actually beaten it (well, defeated all of the shadow monsters at least.)
Even though I've seen screenshots of the game running in DOSbox, when I attempt to run it, I always get "Abnormal Program Termination" and the game will not run.
If I try to run "UNF.exe" this happens right away, otherwise I can run Unforgiv.exe and then select my graphics chipset and then the error occurs. Interestingly, I get the same error if I'm trying to run in from the command shell within Windows XP also.
I have DOSbox 0.74, any ideas?

You'll need to have some patience, after all it's Christmas, family day here ...
But you could begin with posting some relevant details:
Original game or downloaded?
Install procedure? Setup choices? (Detailed please)
Your mount lines? (Detailed please)
Inputs to run the game? (Detailed please)
Did you made any changes in dosbox conf file?
And a Merry Christmas.
See you tomorrow.![Celebratory :bday:](./images/smilies/bday.gif)

Ok, this may be sort of a long story.
Initially I had the shareware version of this game on floppy. But years later, I searched for the full version on the internet and found a site that was selling it, so I bought the full version, which was a download. It was a .zip. The game does not have a proper "install" it simply unzipped to the target directory and you were ready to go. This was years ago, and I did this on a Windows 98 machine at the time I just ran the game in DOS proper. Now I had copied the game directory and all of the files to my XP machine that I had at that time also as a backup. (In fact since you couldn't quit this game without also saving it, copying the folder to another location was a trick I used to use in case I got hit by a level drainer or made some other mistake.) I searched my physical backups but could not find the original .zip. I believe that it was backed up on a CD some years ago that my computer stopped being able to read.
My win 98 machine died a few years ago, but I still had the full game directory copied on my XP machine. I have since upgraded and made that old HD a slave HD in my new XP machine. When I mount the game I am mounting to the E:\unforgiven folder, (Mount c e:\unforg~1) I also copied that folder to my C drive and mounted it from there. The mounting is working at both locations, I have not changed the dosbox conf, and other games work in dosbox. Unforgiv.exe and Unf.exe both launch the game. Unforgiv.exe takes me to the graphics selection screen, but no matter which option I choose I get the "Abnormal Program Termination" error. Unf.exe automatically gives me this error.
When searching for the original .zip, I found an old backed-up copy of Morraff's World, the predecessor to Unforgiven, I simply copied the full installed folder from the CD to my C drive, mounted it, when run it went to the same graphics selection screen that Unforgiven has, I selected one, and the game worked.
One thing I thought of, I wondered if the files were set to "read only" in windows since I know that Unforgiven saves the game data on top of itself. When I view file permissions in Windows, every folder has a "read only" check, but the individual files in the folder do not. I unselected this and chose "apply" but when I viewed the folders again, the check was still there. This likely isn't the problem however because morraff's world works even with this being the case, but I found this to be odd nonetheless.
Oh, and yes, Merry Christmas, I had made the original post early in the morning and it hadn't occurred to me.![Shit-Eating Grin :D](./images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

First: rename that game folder to unf ( 8 chars max in dos, remember?)
Next:
Don't mount the game folder as C root, mount a folder as C and then do a 'CD Folder',
As you're on XP read and apply:
http://www.dosgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5443
Move the game folder to \oldgames\ , run dosbox and input:
cd unf
unforgiv

I was never mounting to the root, I was mounting directly to the directory where the game is installed.
The instructions you linked only elaborate how to have dosbox automatically mount at startup, I did do that for conveniece, as well as change the game directory to UNF. But the error still occurs.
Changing the graphics options did not work either.
I thought that perhaps the memory setting could have something to do with it so I set the XMS EMS and UMB to false but the same error still occurs.
The "Abnormal Program Termination" error doesn't elaborate as to why, I've looked into this error and it seems most of the time when this error is given it'll tell you why. It also looks like that error is specifically a C++ error.
The only further thing I can think of is that maybe I should change the cycle count. But unforgiven is a really simple game and that doesn't make too much sense.

That's what I said:.Patrick Theswayze wrote:I was never mounting to the root, I was mounting directly to the directory where the game is installed.....

About your problems, no need to alter mem settings in dosbox conf, the game runs fine in dosbox default settings.
I begin to think your game files got somehow corrupted.
Because whatever I do here, normal mount or drag/drop, the game runs fine.
You have a PM.
