My friend and I are planning (Fingers crossed!) to go to Australia in about October-ish on a working visa to spend about a year traveling around the country....

Since I know absolutely nothing about it, and since I could get some first hand knowledge about it, I was hoping you all could suggest places we should see, or things we should do, or avoid, etc. etc.

If you really want to do the touristy thing, visit Uluru (Ayers Rock).

Not to mention that more than half the country (NZ) is sitting right inside the mouth of one of the world's largest active volcanos. I remember reading an article a few years back that claimed said volcano erupted back in the 16th century, and that records over in *China* had quoted the Emperor at the time as asking his advisors why the sky had turned pink and why there was a great pillar of smoke to the east. I've visited New Zealand before, and it's an absolutely beautiful country, but seriously, it's another Pompei waiting to happen. Just on a much larger scale.

Anyhow! If you happen to stop by Perth on your adventures, you're more than welcome to pop around and say hi, as I'd be quite happy to meet up. But I must warn you - Perth is quite possibly one of the most boring cities in Australia. Except for Hobart. And Adelaide. Actually, we're not *that* bad.. but, there's a number of ways we could certainly make ourselves more interesting.. nevermind me. <.<

Briefly -
Santhosh, you are being ignorant. You've never been here and you are just believing the media. I live here and love it and i've never witnessed first hand violence fuelled by racism. These types of attacks happen everywhere and the majority that you've heard about were NOT about race. They were muggings that can happen to anyone, anywhere because some people just suck.

CM, I've seriously written enough for an Australian tourism cattledog in the last two posts that got deleted, so unfortunately this will be not as detailed.
I would really suggest you doing a roadtrip up the east coast. It's a brilliant way to see all the little towns and deserted beaches that are so much more beautiful than the tourist spots....
Here are a few places i wrote lots more detailed information about but cannot be bothered right now writing out again: (if you want to know anything specific, just ask)

Brisbane: I live here. It's close to the Glass House Mountains, Stradbroke Island, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, all the theme parks, Steve Irwin's Zoo... It's often overlooked by tourists but it's a great spot. Did i mention i live here and you could meet up with me? I also have a spare room... it's small, but you are welcome to it.

Blue Mountains.

Fingal Bay / Shoal Bay / Salamander Bay / Nelson's Bay: Less touristy, but still with lots of tourist things. If that makes sense. It's not as full on as other places.

Byron Bay: I don't really like Byron, but a lot of people rave about it. The beaches are really nice but there are so many people there and a lot of them are rich snobs. (Don't take my word for it though, it's probably worth a look. A lot of backpackers go there and the nightlife is really good apparently.)

Also, I was talking to my mother about your trip CM and she reminded me that flights here with Jetstar are VERY cheap atm - like, around Aus that is. She has been to Canada (i haven't) and she said Australia is similar in the fact that there is a lot of just land between places of interest, and so maybe a road trip would not be as interesting. She also wanted me to tell you that our "Coastal road" does not actually go along the coast... You have to take exits to get to the beachs and stuff. This didn't really bother me at all when i drove up to Brisbane, but it may mean you will have to decide which beaches you will drive off the main drag for. She suggested flying into Brisbane and maybe road-tripping south from brisbane for a bit, but then flying to the other destinations you want to see as it would be cheaper and you would see more interesting things.
