I've found it, however I can't link it due to the fact that it's in a legal gray area and afaik no shareware version exists.

Possibly Gladiator by Forgotten Sages? Don't remember poisoned food or only two characters, but everything else is in that game.

It has a lot of obscure DOS shareware games from the 90s on it (including this one) and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of them have disappeared completely...
