The series that were popular in the nineties that I played the most probably include Doom , Mortal Kombat , Prince of Persia , Rayman (only one main series game, but there were expansions too), Duke Nukem (II and 3D - never played the first one really), Warcraft , Heroes ...

The description sounds a lot like "Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure", but that's a Wii game, not a Windows game. Maybe you played it via an emulator?

Sounded a bit like "Trine" until you mentioned the 3D perspective.

There always is, but you need someone with experience in hacking to do so. The noob method, as you described it, rarely works.
